FALL RIVER, MA - The annual Tommy Keyes Fall River Junior Open was held at the Fall River Country Club on Monday, July 18th. Over the years, this historic Massachusetts junior golf tournament has featured many of New England’s PGA Tour players, local club golf professionals, elite high school players, dominant amateur golfers, and numerous past, present, and future club champions. This season marked the 33rd time the tournament has been held. As the event ages deeper into a fourth decade of promoting junior golf, we now have former participant’s children competing in the tournament!
That little tidbit of information is especially notable this year. Growing up in neighboring Rhode Island, long-time PGA Tour player Billy Andrade played in the event, his best finish being 2nd place. This year Andrade's son, Cam, played in the event and quickly made his own mark. Congratulations to Cam Andrade, the 2011 Tommy Keyes Fall River Junior Open Overall Champion and the Boys 18 to 16 Division winner!
Cam's score of 73 (+3) was 3 shots lower than member and FRCC's defending junior club champion Andrew Furtado, who posted a 76 and finished alone in 2nd place. Andrade made his presence felt early by making two quick birdies, starting the day two under par after four holes and taking a sizeable lead to start the stroke play event. That lead vanished instantly though, as two errant tee shots on the fifth hole led to a quadruple bogey eight, opening the door for his closest competitors to make their move. However, Andrade settled down immediately, pouring in an eagle putt on the tenth hole, and played the final thirteen holes just one over par to seize the title.
Brandon Macedo, who was the Boys 15 to 13 Division Champion in 2010, moved up an age bracket but still finished 3rd overall, posting a 77. Finishing in a tie for 4th overall after shooting 79 was FRCC member Todd Souza, and current FRCC outside operations staff member Ben Lloyd.
The 2011 Boys 15 to 13 Division was won by Justin Martone, who posted a score of 86 and edged Griffin Bushell by 1 stroke. Ryan Beliveau finished alone in 3rd place, while last year’s 12 and Under Division Champion, Jared Silva, finished 4th in the division.
The Girls Division was won by nine year-old A.J. Chicharro, who shot an impressive 102 from the FRCC red tees, set up at 5400 yards! FRCC WGA golfers beware!
Thank you to all of the 2011 Tommy Keyes Fall River Junior Open participants, the FRCC membership, and Head Golf Professional Tom Tetrault for their continued support of this venerable junior golf tournament. A special thank you to Roger Dugal, John Chicharro, and Marty Bernat for helping out on tournament day!
More pictures from the event (thank you, John!) can be found on the Fall River Country Club Facebook page, or by emailing Tournament Director/Assistant Professional Ben Kilborn. We hope to see you all again in 2012!
