It takes a Herc-ulean effort to win the 2010 July Invitational!
Fall River, MA - Sixty teams from across the country gathered July 9th-11th for the annual 54-hole July Invitational Tournament at Fall River Country Club. The final outcome is a story even the Disney Company could not devise.
A shotgun start to the Invitational's Championship 9 led them to begin their final nine holes on hole #9. As Herc Melo and partner Bob Ellenwood (Montaup CC, RI) reached the par 3 8th hole, the apparent final hole of their day, they trailed playing partners Sean Gurry and Dave Lenz (Brookside GC, CA) by 3 shots. Sean and Dave were already 4.5 (1/2 shots
are used) strokes under par and it was safe to guess they were the likely
leaders of the pack.
Herc, never shy about making bold claims on the golf course, announced that he was going to make a hole-in-one on the final hole and subsequently force a playoff. As his tee shot soared toward the pin and disappeared from sight approaching the elevated green, the group wondered if he had boasted correctly. When they arrived at the green and found the tee shot in the cup, Herc jumped for joy, injuring his leg in the process! Unfortunately for Sean and Dave, they had to scramble for a bogey 4 and Herc's prediction came true. A sudden-death playoff ensued.
After a thirty minute break for scoring, players and spectators gathered on the 1st tee for the playoff. Despite his hobbled leg, Herc's drive found the fairway nearly 300 yards away from the tee! While his fatigued opponents and partner battled errant shots, Herc managed a tricky two-putt for a net 4 to win the first playoff hole and secure the 2010 July Invitational title for Bob and himself. In another rare twist of fate, this was Ellenwood's second title in three years, with two different partners! This is the first FRCC Board Tournament title for Herc Melo.
The second overall prize was awarded to the playoff runner-up team of Gurry and Lenz. Finishing a single shot back were the teams of Dan Salmon III and Bob Coleman (Cape Cod CC, MA) and Jim Palumbo and Kevin Snyder (Swansea CC, MA). They finished 3rd and 4th respectively, based on a matching of cards starting with the lowest handicap hole.
